From genes to games to the lab bench

Research at three Hong Kong universities: an independent study of heart disease that I designed and carried out myself after a CityUHK internship, a cognitive game for autistic children at PolyU, and bench work in a stem-cell lab at HKU.

Inflammatory Proteins & Risk of Atrial Fibrillation: A Mendelian Randomization Study

I used inherited genetic variants as natural experiments to test which inflammatory proteins may actually cause atrial fibrillation, the most common heart-rhythm disorder, rather than just appearing alongside it.

The internshipCityUHK Bright Future Engineering Talent HubBiomedical Engineering, with Dr. Bee Luan Khoo and PhD mentor Jiyuan Sun. I analysed cardiac GWAS data and presented my findings to faculty.
My independent extensionThis Mendelian randomization studyI formed the question, ran the full genetic analysis in R and wrote the paper on my own. It earned a Gold CREST Award from the British Science Association.

  • Strongest signal: IL-6 receptor, replicated by three independent instruments
  • Methods: two-sample MR in R; IVW and Wald ratio, MR-Egger, Steiger and leave-one-out tests, Bonferroni and FDR correction

PolyU Cognitive Games Project

On Prof. Yvonne Han's team, I designed and built a sequence and pattern game that trains working memory and planning in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is set in a Hong Kong cha chaan teng, where players help a kitten chef plan menus, shop for ingredients and cook.

  • Built on research: visual prompts, predictable rules and redo options, because text-heavy instructions can overwhelm neurodivergent players
  • Measured progress: omission and commission errors, response time and streaks of perfect levels
  • Tested with EEG: helped run pilot sessions tracking brain connectivity (theta coherence) during gameplay
  • Read deeply: wrote 20+ structured critiques of ASD studies on EEG connectivity and tDCS, probing controls and confounds

Bar height = seconds the order is shown (6s → 21s); dishes need 3 → 6 ingredients, with more distractors at each level.

Lab shadowing with Prof. Ralph Jauch

In Prof. Jauch's stem-cell and epigenetics lab, a team of 20+ researchers, I joined lab meetings and assisted PhD students at the bench.

  • Research seen up close: projects on reversing cell ageing through epigenetics, and stem-cell models of ALS that keep age-related markers
  • Hands-on work: mRNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and qPCR for an siRNA study of TDP-43, plus E. coli culture for an evolution study

From my lab notebook · 11 Aug 2026

How we measured a gene knockdown with qPCR

  • Experiment: silence TDP-43 (a protein that builds up in ALS) with siRNA, and compare against untreated cells, normalised to the housekeeping gene GAPDH
  • Method: RNA → cDNA → qPCR. The DNA doubles each cycle, so the cycle where the signal crosses the threshold (Cq) reveals how much RNA was there
  • Reading it: fold change ≈ 2ΔCq. A Cq of 15 vs 20 means about 32× less TDP-43 RNA, so the knockdown worked
threshold untreated · Cq 15 siRNA · Cq 20 PCR cycle →

Independent investigation · 2026

Fruit waste as an antioxidant source for wound healing I tested whether discarded longan seeds, avocado seeds and grapefruit peel, alone and in pairs, could neutralise the reactive oxygen species that slow healing in chronic wounds. I used chemical screening and a spectrophotometric permanganate (PRAC) assay.
Avocado seed83.0%
Longan seed85.2%
Grapefruit peel90.3%
Longan + citrus94.2%
Gallic acid standard96.8%
The longan + citrus blend was the strongest combination, close to the pure antioxidant standard (water control: 22.7%). Spotting tiles showing each extract before and after the tannin test Tannin test, before and afterAll three extracts turned blue-black, confirming antioxidant tannins. Click to enlarge.

02Growth Mindset Study

Turning research into six days of practice

An independent program I designed and ran to test whether Carol Dweck's mindset research could change how children respond to challenge.

Dedicated to

Dr. Carol S. Dweck, whose research taught me that ability can grow.

Dweck showed that children who believe their abilities can develop take on harder challenges and recover better from failure. I wanted to know if those ideas could move off the page and into a room of children, through experiences rather than lectures.

What parents noticed afterwards

Post-program parent survey

rated the program's impact on mindset and confidence 7/10 or higherA third gave it a full 10/10.
Overall impact
saw their child become more persistent or patient on difficult tasksTwo-thirds saw a noticeable increase; the rest were already highly resilient.
Day 1 · Plasticity
hear growth-oriented language from their child consistently or frequentlyHalf said consistently.
Day 2 · "Yet"
say their child now actively looks for a new strategy when stuckInstead of just trying harder at the same approach.
Day 4 · Strategy

These are parents' own observations in a post-program survey, not a controlled trial. Other results: 83% of children are receptive to or actively use feedback, and every parent rated their likelihood to recommend the program at 8/10 or higher.

03KGV Ethics Series

Big Questions, not rules

A school-wide initiative I founded and direct. It replaces "don't do this" awareness posters with real moral dilemmas, asking students to think about why they make the choices they do.

ConsumptionVaping, substance use and fast fashion
Digital PresenceCyberbullying and online duty of care
EscapismScrolling and gaming: when does relaxing become avoiding?
PerformanceAcademic pressure, integrity and self-worth
Identity & BelongingHonesty, group pressure and community
Printed postersPlaced in busy spots: corridors, stairwells and the Science Block
Digital screensThe same theme shown on school TV screens, refreshed every fortnight
Ethics Prompt PacksI write a case study and Big Question for each theme, then coordinate prefects to run the discussions

The SCMP is Hong Kong's leading English-language newspaper, founded in 1903. Young Post is its section for young readers and student writers.

I've written opinion pieces and features on global issues, technology ethics and society since 2023. During my 2024 internship I reported on local news and culture, interviewed professionals, and represented the paper at press conferences, including one with the CEO of Swire Properties.

Confluence of Origins

10 million travelling in the same direction,
to witness, following
144 years,
the ethereal site.

A poem about the Maha Kumbh Mela, where faith and a whole crowd meet at the confluence of three rivers.

Read the full poem

In my sight was a melee,
one that I had never seen.
10 million travelling in the same direction,
to witness, following
144 years,
the ethereal site.

The beaming sun was a blanket covering us all.
Mothers restlessly carried their small children,
middle-aged men held sacks on their heads,
and excited foreigners scrutinised the scene.
Everyone strived to complete the final kilometers.

Different it was:
The usual cacophony of traffic,
now a repeating rhythm of footsteps.
An area without internet; no phones to distract.
Disconnected from the daily echoes of a busy life,
we stood where time had lost its influence.

Relief spread through the crowd,
like waves along a shore.
People failed to notice the pearls of sweat
rolling down their faces,
as the water was finally in sight.

Some chatted with their relatives,
inundated with happiness.
Others prayed before the horizon,
lost in self-thought and reflection.

People immersed themselves,
at the point where they all met:
Ganges, Yamuna and Sarasvati.

Amid the thick wall that modernisation created,
it was relieving to know the faith can still break through,
as humanity reunited to celebrate and cherish.

The Maha Kumbh Mela—a transcendent moment.
